If you measure this planet not by its age but by the time it has left for complex life, it stands late rather than in the middle. It is roughly four and a half billion years old, and the window for multicellular life closes in about eight hundred million to one billion years. The reason is the sun. It grows about ten percent brighter every billion years, silicate rock weathering therefore pulls ever more CO2 out of the air, and at some point the concentration falls below the threshold at which plants can still perform photosynthesis. Oxygen follows, probably within a geologically short span. Around eighty percent of the time in which this Earth could carry anything like us is already behind us.
I consider this calculation the most honest position fix we have, and at the same time the most useless. It is useless because it counts in a currency no human being holds. Nobody makes decisions across eight hundred million years. The regular transformation speed of this planet runs in millions of years and therefore lies outside anything a life, a term of office or a constitution can hold.
Which is precisely why a different question interests me. Not how long the Earth has left, but which transition is the only one fast enough to fall inside our timekeeping. There is exactly one, and it has already begun.
The dial that never belonged to anyone
In its youth the sun was about thirty percent weaker than today. By every law of physics the Earth should have been a frozen ball throughout that period. It was not. It carried liquid water, continuously, across billions of years, while the radiation falling on it changed by a third.
The reason is a control loop nobody built. When it gets warmer, it rains more, rock weathers faster and binds more carbon until the temperature falls again. When it gets colder, the process reverses. That is this planet's thermostat, and it works with a response time of hundreds of thousands of years. It is slow, relentless and entirely indifferent. It has no operator, no owner and no address.
This property is the actual subject of my letter. The habitability of this planet never hung on a decision. It was a chemical quantity, and it was therefore not negotiable, not for sale and not available to anyone. To speak about the future of the Earth was to speak about natural law, not about jurisdiction. That condition is ending right now, and it is ending without announcement.
What we have already turned
Because the dial is already being turned, only nobody has called it that. The carbon we release enters the atmosphere one to two orders of magnitude faster than in any known natural release, faster even than during the warming event fifty six million years ago that still serves as the great comparison case. The system responds no differently than it always has. It merely responds to an input for which its entire history holds no precedent.
The more remarkable process is a second one, almost never discussed. By the mechanics of the Earth's orbit, the next glaciation would have been due within a few tens of thousands of years. According to the available model calculations it will not occur, probably for the next hundred thousand years. A single species has cancelled an astronomically scheduled event. Not postponed, not softened, cancelled.
A third adjustment comes on top, and its result is already fixed even though none of us will see it. After major extinction events the biosphere generally needs five to ten million years to reorganise. Which lineages carry that recovery is being decided now, and the selection criterion is us: compatibility with human use. We are co-writing the cast of a planet we will never set foot on.
All three happened incidentally. Nobody resolved it, nobody answered for it, it is the residue of how we do business. And as long as that remains true it is consequential, but it is not rule. The difference arises the moment somebody reaches for the same dial on purpose.
From side effect to intent
The step I am concerned with is being prepared right now, and it carries a technical name: solar radiation modification, the deliberate reflection of sunlight, usually conceived as the injection of reflective particles into the stratosphere. Physically this is not a bold idea but the imitation of a process that every large volcanic eruption demonstrates. Politically it is something entirely different from anything negotiated under climate policy so far. Cutting emissions means stopping doing something. Reflecting sunlight means beginning to operate the planet.
Anyone objecting that this is a distant prospect should look at where the money comes from. Between 2007 and 2025 roughly 340 million dollars flowed worldwide into research on these technologies, about half of it from public sources. In 2025 alone more than 60 million came from commercial or philanthropic funds. The balance is tipping into private hands, and quickly. One company is developing purpose built particles for injection into the stratosphere and publishing its own proposals for the safety and controllability requirements such systems should meet.
I do not want that last sentence to pass unheard. A private actor is writing the compliance standard for a planetary intervention system while supplying the technology for it. That is the point at which the thermostat changes hands. Not by purchase, not by contract, but because someone is first in a position to operate it and nobody is telling them anything. No binding international framework for these technologies exists.
The hand that can no longer let go
What distinguishes this intervention from all others is not its reach but its duration of commitment. Cooling the planet artificially while the underlying cause continues stores up the suppressed warming. Suspend the cooling and it does not return gradually but arrives within a few years all at once, faster than any ecosystem can adapt. Implementation therefore demands, depending on scale, a commitment across many decades or longer.
Set that against the institutions that would have to carry such a commitment. A legislative term runs four or five years. A company operating the technology has a median lifespan of a few decades. The most expensive part of this undertaking is not the operation. The most expensive part is the promise not to stop. And that promise has to be honoured by someone not yet born at the moment of decision.
Nor need this be a decision taken by many. The effect knows no border, and an uncoordinated unilateral move, say in a single hemisphere, would have large and potentially undesirable regional consequences in areas far from the point of injection. One country cools itself and shifts another country's monsoon. There is no procedure in which the affected party learns of it beforehand, and none in which it objects.
Who reaches for the dial
The regulatory picture is so full of gaps because every party has so far examined only its own half. The European Commission has asked its scientific advisers for an assessment of risks and governance options. The American science office has delivered a research plan and governance framework at the request of Congress. The African ministerial conference on the environment has reaffirmed its call for a non use agreement and urged its states to carry that position into every multilateral forum. Three continents, three starting points, no common floor.
I consider prohibition or permission the wrong first question, and it has blocked all movement for years. The first question is whether anyone would even notice it happening, and whether it could be proven who did it. Two building blocks have been proposed for this that both advocates and critics can support: a series of international scientific assessments and a transparent international monitoring system. This is not a compromise born of weakness. Without detection and attribution, every prohibition and every permission is worth exactly the same, namely nothing.
The second building block is less comfortable, and I know of nobody who says it out loud. A function with a binding duration of centuries must not rest with an actor whose existence is measured in years. That holds for companies, and it holds equally for individual states. Whoever operates the dial must be bound by a rule that carries at least as long as the intervention itself. We have never built such a binding for anything on this planet. That is not a reason to leave it undone. It is the reason to start now, while there is still nothing to bind.
The default, not the exit
Here something closes that has occupied me since this series began. There is a widespread notion that governing the Earth is a transitional problem because humanity is becoming multiplanetary anyway. I think the order is reversed, and I think the drive behind it is real. Humans go where they have not yet been. That is not evasion of a difficult planet but the most constant property of this species.
What has changed, and changed completely, is the price of that drive. Every territory humans have taken possession of so far already worked before they arrived. There was air, there was water, there was a control loop running without assistance. The journeys were murderous, but the place itself came free. Expansion has always meant arriving.
From now on it means operating. On every other celestial body there is no control loop that works without us. There are habitats that are operated or not operated, and whose failure horizon is measured in hours rather than decades. Every design for a rebuilt Martian climate is exactly the operation described here, only without the remainder of self regulation the Earth still grants us. The step into multiplanetary life is therefore not the exit from the problem of this letter. It is its default case: habitability as a decision, with an operator, a duration of commitment and a price.
The Earth, in this reckoning, is not the place we leave behind. It is the first environment in which it becomes clear whether we can do this at all. Whoever fails to produce the rule for the dial here will not invent it where the margin for error is zero.
For four and a half billion years the habitability of this Earth was a chemical quantity. It was therefore unsellable, incorruptible and available to no one. It is becoming a decision, and decisions have authors, interests and prices. This transition is the only planetary process fast enough to fall inside a single lifespan, and it is running with nobody in charge.
So my question to you: which institution do you know that could carry a commitment lasting longer than itself?
